Campbellsville City

Founding

Campbellsville was founded in 1817 by Andrew Campbell. Campbellsville University, Taylor Regional Hospital, the historic downtown, and the proximity to Green River Lake State Park are some of the things it is known for. Campbellsville is located in Taylor County.

 Andrew Campbell, who had moved from Augusta County, Virginia, laid out the city in 1817. Campbell sold lots in Campbellsville in the 18th century. Campbellsville was the county seat after Taylor County was separated from Green County. The city agreed to sell the public square for $1 to build a courthouse.

Historic Sites

 Several historic sites in Campbellsville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are several blocks of Main Street in the Campbellsville Historic Commercial District. The First Street Brewery dates back to the prohibition. It will be open for the first time since the 1930s in 2021. The most notable structure in this district is the Merchant Tower. Since 1980 it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Union Army used the first courthouse in the city as a barracks, and it was burned by the Confederates in 1864. There was a second courthouse built on the same site after the war. The old courthouse and the third courthouse were built on the same property. A fourth courthouse was built on Main Street in 2008. Several old commercial buildings were removed from the 300 block of East Main Street.

Parks

 Miller Park has a swimming pool, tennis courts, softball fields, playground, walking track gardens, and open space. The park is surrounded by the Pitman Creek. The park is named after a former mayor. The nature trail is part of a Trail Town project.

The Heartland Commerce and Technology Park is in Campbellsville. The INFAC Corporation is an automotive components manufacturer. The “Build Ready” certification was given to the HCTP in June of last year.

 Green River Lake and Green River Lake State Park are part of the local economy.

Education

Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 as an academy.

 There are school districts in parts of Campbellsville.

 The Campbellsville Independent School District is in Campbellsville.

 The Taylor County School District is part of the Taylor County School District.

 Campbellsville has two public schools, Taylor County High School and Campbellsville High School.

 The Taylor County Public Library has a lending library.

Things to do in Campbellsville

Basketball: Pick a captain and make your teams! There is a lot of fun on the courts. Guests may check out sports equipment

Biking: There are 28 miles of trails that can be used for hiking and mountain biking. There is an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Green River Lake.

Birding:  Resident and migratory songbirds are abundant at the state park in the spring and summer. Birds are abundant on the lake from the shoreline of the state park. The park is where Henslow’s sparrows nest most years. Eagles can be seen during the winter months with peaks in January and February, but can not be seen during the rest of the year. During the fall migration, osprey are more common.

Boating: Green River Lake is great for water sports. There are 200 covered slips, rental houseboats, fishing boats, ski boats, jet skis, and pontoon boats at the marina. Open in March and November.

Camping: The campground has 167 water and electric RV sites and 60 primitive tent sites. There’s internet available. There is a grocery, a dump station, three central service buildings with showers, rest rooms and a laundry facility available.

Sport Fishing: Green River Lake is a great place to fish for “reel” excitement. The challenge of fishing for white, largemouth, smallmouth, Kentucky bass, bluegill, crappie and Muskie will appeal to both the avid angler and beginning fisherman. A fishing license is needed in Kentucky.

Hiking: There are 28 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking at the parks. There is an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Green River Lake through the trails.

Horse Riding:  The trails at Green River Lake State Park can be used for many things. Some trails have restrictions on bikes and horses.

Golf: An 18-hole golf course is a great place for the entire family to play together. Head to the campground to test your putting skills and grab your putter.

Picnicking: The views of the lake and the great outdoors add to a family picnic. You can rent a picnic shelter up to one year in advance. For hours of entertainment, there are two playgrounds, picnic tables, and grills.

Swimming: You can enjoy the sand between your toes at the campground beach. Volleyball lovers can almost always find a game on the sand court.
